On Wednesday Mrs. Marvell The season finale, titled “No Ordinary”, Kamala Khan (Iman Velani) has the full power of the Dimension of Light, which she harnesses with the magical bangle inherited from her great-grandmother Aisha (Mahweesh Hayat). To stop Kamran (Rish Shah)’s rampage against damage control management, Kamala relies on her ability to “embed”, as the harsh light fixtures appear to expand themselves. As Bruno (Matt Lintz) revealed, the best explanation for Kamala’s powers is in one word: “boom.”
In the comic books, Kamala and Kamran are known as “nuomans”: descendants of non-humans that activate their latent abilities when exposed to the DNA-modifying fog of Terrigene, which gives humans their power in a process called Terrigenesis. Like Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, the polymorphous Kamala’s shape-shifting forces allow her to enlarge – or “embiggen” – her body.
In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyDirectors, Adel Elaraby and Bilal Falah, President of Marvel Studios and Mrs. Marvell Producer Kevin Feige pushed for Kamala’s mutant powers to be shown as a “Tough Light” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
“First of all, Kevin didn’t want to do a literal translation of what was in the comic book. It’s an edit,” Falah said. “We started with this [idea] From Hard Light, and from there, we set out to create what that might be—while still honoring what is in the comic book. In comedy, she can’t control her strength at first. It makes her body bigger and smaller, which is a good metaphor for being a teenager.”
Falah continued, “But towards the end of the comic book, she was really in control of it. So, we created the same thing. At first, she couldn’t control it, and step by step, the more she started to know her history. She became Mrs. Marvel. In the last episode, she has that The big fist with the harsh light that can shatter things, and then eventually become the same.”
Al-Arabi added: “The word ‘Impige’ is one of the most important words in the comic book, so we knew right away that we eventually needed our version of ‘Impijin’.”
Visually, Kamala’s abilities are on wavelengths similar to Carol “Captain Marvel” Danvers (Brie Larson) and Monica Rambo (Teona Paris), the cosmic superheroes who will join Kamala when she returns in marvels.
“Supervising Producer Gina Berger realized that the show needed to balance what makes comedy special and unique, while at the same time developing it and making it a true adaptation,” Sana Amanat, co-author of Kamala Khan Mrs. MarvellExecutive Producer, previously told EW. “This was Kevin [Feige’s] The first challenge for me. He said, “Can you adapt this? You are so close to comics, do you think you can adapt this?”
However, the fact of Kamala’s genetic makeup predates Feige: the character was conceived as mutated but was created at a time when Marvel Comics was downplaying its mutated and X-Men characters in favor of Inhumans.
